Lawrence/Nelson FFA Chapter

Derek Harrington, Chapter Reporter

The Lawrence/Nelson FFA Chapter has been very active for the 2009-2010 school year so far.  They have participated in numerous activities and fundraisers. Following is a recap of the year to date.
The year began with the L/N chapter working at the Nuckolls County fair concession stand.  All members helped with this and it was an excellent fundraiser.  The chapter had some good times and caught up with each other since this took place during the summer.
The next activity was Husker Harvest Days in Grand Island, NE.  The members enjoyed touring the grounds and learning about new technologies.  Each member was given a paper that was very similar to a scavenger hunt.  They had to find certain booths and get certain signatures.  Some of the members had a very fun time with a certain booth because the booth presenter took pictures with almost all of the members.  The members left Husker Harvest Days impressed with all of the new technologies and seeing what the agricultural industry is up to.
Next, the chapter officers took part in the Water Jamboree at Liberty Cove. The officers served as guides for the day.  They took their respective groups to eight different stations that taught local elementary kids the value of water and everything that it does for us.  The officers also took part in a “water relay”.  Two officers and their groups went head to head and ran an obstacle course with a pan of water.  The object of the relay was to teach the kids about the importance of conserving and saving water.  The officers had fun and ended the day with a water fight.  Needless to say, the boys won!
The officer team also helped out with the Farm Safety Day at the Nuckolls County Fairgrounds.  They split into two groups of four and discussed the importance of cattle and equine safety.  The officers felt that this was important because they believed that there are too many accidents on farms and the majority of those happen with young children. They believed that this would help reduce the amount of accidents in our area.
At the end of October, our chapter hosted our second annual Harvest Supper.  This is an event that we started to show our respective communities how much we appreciate them.  It was a free donation and all of the area farmers and their families were invited to come in and eat a free meal and have a good time with other local farmers.  The whole event was sponsored by the L/N chapter and we had some very generous donations.  This was a major fundraiser for us and is one that we really enjoy putting on.  We hope that the event continues to happen in the future.
The year’s first competition took place in November.  This was the livestock judging contest.  The L/N senior division did very well.  We had two individuals, Kaci Schroer and Garret Svoboda, who placed in the top twelve.  The senior team also placed second and will compete in the state competition.  The Jr. team also did well with the team placing fourth.  They will also compete in the state competition.  This was the result of early morning practices and dedication.  Ms. Tomlinson, our advisor, is proud of these accomplishments and wishes the teams the best of luck at state.
The last event for the L/N chapter before the Christmas break was another fundraiser.  The members sold Christmas greenery.  There were many options available and the chapter sold many items.  This is another activity that our chapter enjoys because this gets everybody in the Christmas spirit.
This is what our chapter has been up to and the second semester looks like it will be just as busy as the first.  We are looking forward to it!
