Sandy Creek FFA Chapter

The Sandy Creek FFA

Katlin Lang, Reporter

The Sandy Creek High School FFA chapter has been around for a short six years but has obtained many high awards and accomplished great goals in this time. The chapter has had five National qualifiers and numerous state awards.  The Sandy Creek FFA currently has forty four members.
The 2009-2010 officer team is comprised of Ethan Lang, President; Preston Hild, Vice president; Kayla Lanhdorf, Secretary; Brianna Schlick, Treasurer; Katlin Lang, Reporter; Katie Benton, Sentinel; Levi Schlick, Parliamentarian; Stevie Crookshanks, Historian; and Amy Tomlinson, Advisor.  The officer team and advisor traveled to Niobrara State Park for the annual FFA Officer Retreat.  During the officer retreat, the chapter’s calendar and activities were planned for the upcoming year.
Over the summer, the members kept busy with the chapter’s vineyard donated to the chapter by Steve and Thomas Kluver of Fairfield. Over 4 tons of grapes were harvested and shipped to  Mac’s Creek Winery in Lexington.
A Lake Day was held at Lovewell Lake in Kansas to interest and recruit youth into the FFA program. Much fun was had by all and the Lake Day was considered to be a success with over 60 members and parents attending.
As the school year started, members began competing in FFA contests; including livestock judging.  The junior team of Caleb Schlick, Jared Taylor, Trevor DeVries, and Brett Peshesk qualified for state livestock judging placing second in the district competition. A harvest supper was held in November as a community service project to honor hardworking farmers and provide them with a free meal during the busy harvest season.
Ten members attended the National  FFA convention this year in Indianapolis, Indiana to learn about FFA’s impact on a nationwide scale and experience FFA at a national level.  Members attended Leadership Workshops and the Career Fair.  They were able to tour the Indianapolis Speedway and the Indianapolis Zoo.  Sessions with Keynote Speakers of Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs and the Paralympic Skier Josh Sundquist left a powerful mark on the members.  The members went to the convention to compete in competitions, attend the nation’s largest youth convention, learn and participate in leadership development workshops and build contacts with other students across the nation.
Additionally, the agriculture education department also received a grant to purchase a greenhouse for installation in the spring.  The South Central Unified School Board also helped out the chapter by approving additional funds needed for installation to include water, gas and electrical lines. Members are also preparing their hydroponic system for tomato’s over the winter months.
Members are now preparing for the upcoming Leadership Skills Events where they will be able to continue to achieve for their chapter and are begining to make future plans for the expansion of the vineyard.
