Weekly Montana Hay Report
Compared to last week: Hay prices remain steady with very limited current
transactions reported this week. Trade activity continues to remains light with
most hay previously contracted this summer. Supplemental feeding should begin to
increase but most ranchers are still disappointed with current price levels.
All sales FOB the stack and per ton basis in large rounds or large square bales,
unless otherwise stated.
Alfalfa: Supreme 165.00-190.00; Premium small squares horse hay 200.00-
205.00; Good 115.00-140.00, small squares 130.00, Fair 100.00-120.00.
Alfalfa/grass mix Good small squares 4.00-5.00 per bale.
Grass: Good to Premium small squares 125.00, 4.00-5.00 per bale; Fair to
Good large rounds 80.00-90.00.
Timothy: Premium small squares 180.00-200.00.
Straw: Large rounds 35.00-50.00.
Alfalfa hay test guidelines, used with visual appearance and intent of
sale. Quantitative factors are approximate and many factors can affect
feeding value.
