Missouri Weekly Weighted Average Feeder Cattle Report (01/02/09)
Receipts: 9893 Week Ago: 0 Year Ago: 18,288
Compared to two weeks ago feeder steers and heifers traded 4.00 to 6.00 higher,
with some instances of 7.00 to 8.00 higher on steers under 500 lbs and heifers
over 700 lbs. Feeder supply was light this week as many local auctions were
closed for the holiday?s. The light offerings combined with buyers that seemed
to have a few orders provided a ?holiday bonus? for those producers that decided
to market the last week of 2008. The slight upturn to the market during a week
when demand is historically very light caught the attention of many producers
and has made for some interesting talks about just how the first full week of
2009 will play out. In the past the first tax week of a new year is typically
one of the largest total receipt weeks of the year. Some observers don?t believe
the supply of cattle in the country is that large, while others have talked
about the number of farmers choosing to hold off on marketing due to the down
turn in prices over the last few months. The question now is if the numbers are
indeed out is this slight upturn enough to make farmers turn loose and if so can
the market handle the increased supply? Should make for an interesting start to
the 2009 marking year.
